The game
The Kansas City Chiefs face the Green Bay Packers in the final preseason game before the 2019 season gets underway. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. (Arrowhead Time). The game will be carried locally by KCTV5.
The Chiefs are 1-2 in the preseason, coming off a 27-17 loss to the San Francisco 49ers last Saturday in Kansas City. The Packers are also 1-2 in exhibition action. Last week, they dropped a road game (played in Winnipeg) to the Oakland Raiders 22-21.
The two teams are familiar with each other in the preseason; they’ve met in the exhibition finale in three of the last four seasons. The Chiefs have won the last two preseason matchups.
The Chiefs and Packers will play again in just under two months. The Packers will travel to Kansas City on October 27 to face the Chiefs on Sunday Night Football.
Under head coach Andy Reid, the Chiefs are coming off their third-straight AFC West championship. Last season’s 12-4 record — and Patrick Mahomes’ MVP season — propelled the team to the first seed in the AFC and the AFC championship game.
The Packers finished 2018 6-9-1, which was good for a third-place finish in the NFC North. Longtime head coach Mike McCarthy was fired after a home loss to the Arizona Cardinals in December dropped the team to 4-7-1 on the season. In the offseason, interim coach Joe Philbin was replaced by Matt LaFleur, who had previously served as offensive coordinator of the Los Angeles Rams in 2017 and the Tennessee Titans in 2018.
Few — if any — Chiefs starters are expected to appear in the game. On Tuesday, Reid said that even newly-acquired backup quarterback Matt Moore will sit this one out. Expect the players on the back end of the 90-man rosters on both teams to play ferociously; the game will be their last chance to prove they belong on the 53-man rosters that will be announced Saturday.
