The game
The San Francisco 49ers come to Arrowhead Stadium to meet the Kansas City Chiefs in the third exhibition game for both teams. The Chiefs are 1-1 in the preseason after a 17-7 loss road loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers last Saturday. The 49ers are 2-0 in preseason action after defeating the Denver Broncos 24-15 on Monday night.
Kickoff will be at 7 p.m. Arrowhead Time. The game will be carried locally by KCTV-5.
The Chiefs finished the 2018 regular season with a 12-4 record — good for a third consecutive AFC West title — and an appearance in the AFC Championship game. The 49ers finished third in the NFC West with a 4-12 record.
The two teams last met in at Arrowhead during Week 3 in 2018. The Chiefs defeated the 49ers 38-27 to go 3-0 on the season. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes completed 24 passes on 38 attempts for 314 yards and a pair of touchdowns. 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was 20 of 30 with 251 yards and two touchdowns, but was injured (and lost for the season) in the game’s fourth quarter.
The two teams have played exhibition games twice in the last three seasons. Their last preseason meeting was in the first week of the 2017 exhibition season, which marked the first game action for both Mahomes and Garoppolo for their respective teams. The 49ers defeated the Chiefs 27-17 in that game.
We expect the Chiefs starters to play through the first two quarters of the game before giving way to the second and third-stringers. We are not likely to see any starters play in the final preseason game against the Green Bay Packers this Thursday night.
