The Game

In the second game of the preseason campaign, the Kansas City Chiefs face the Pittsburgh Steelers at Heinz Field on Saturday night. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. Arrowhead Time. The game will be carried locally by KCTV-5 and nationally on NFL Network. The Steelers telecast will be used on NFL Network.

The Chiefs finished the 2018 season 12-4, winning their third consecutive AFC West championship and appearing in the AFC Championship game. In their opening preseason game last Saturday, they defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 38-17. The Steelers finished second in the AFC North last season with a record of 9-6-1. Last week, the Steelers opened their preseason schedule by defeating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 30-28.

The two teams last met in the 2018 regular season, when the Chiefs defeated the Steelers 42-37 in Pittsburgh. It was the first regular-season victory for the Chiefs in Pittsburgh since 1986. The last time the two teams met during the preseason was in 2013 — also in Pittsburgh. In that game, the Chiefs defeated the Steelers 26-20.

On Thursday, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said that he expects his starters to play for two quarters “or thereabouts.” He also said that wide receivers Gehrig Dieter and Davon Grayson, defensive back Michael Hunter and fullback/tight end John Lovett will miss the game with injuries.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said on Thursday that he will play more starters than he did against the Buccaneers — but also that he intended to start second-year quarterback Mason Rudolph against the Chiefs.

This could be a somewhat emotionally-charged game for the Steelers and their fans. Pittsburgh wide receivers coach Darryl Drake, 62, died suddenly on Sunday. We join our colleagues at sister SBNation site Behind the Steel Curtain — and Steelers fans everywhere — in mourning Drake’s passing.
