25 Days of Draftmas: wide receiver Deebo Samuel could contribute on day one

It’s day two of 25 days of draft prospects leading up to Draft Day!

NCAA Football: Chattanooga at South Carolina Jeff Blake-USA TODAY Sports

A very Merry Draftmas to you! It’s 25 Days of Draftmas on Arrowhead Pride, where we’ll be giving you a Kansas City Chiefs draft prospect every day in April leading up to the NFL Draft. You’ll get a daily prospect profile like this one right up until Draft Day.

Deebo Samuel, wide receiver

5’11” | 214 lbs | South Carolina

NFL: Combine Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

Projected draft range: Round two

I would take him in the: second round

One-sentence bio: 2018 first-team All-American and All-SEC, whose real name is Tyshun — got the nickname “Deebo” from the movie Friday.

One-sentence scouting report: Quick receiver with good hands that is an excellent route runner from the slot or the boundary.

One play:

How he fits in KC:

Samuel is a receiver that could come in and contribute on day one in an already-loaded Kansas City Chiefs offense.

His ability to create space and get open quickly from the slot would add a much-needed target for Patrick Mahomes in the middle of the field. Last year, when the offense was without Sammy Watkins — the other real man-coverage beater — there were times where the offense struggled to move the ball. Samuel would give that extra element, forcing teams to respect more of the field alongside Watkins, Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce.

Samuel also has room to grow as a receiver — and while he’s not the tallest receiver, he’s built well enough to handle outside duties against bigger cornerbacks. Should the Chiefs need to replace a receiver this year or next, Samuel could offer some serious upside and flexibility.

We talked to Samuel at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, and asked him about playing for the Chiefs: “It would be a great feeling,” he said, “going out there and knowing I’ve got a great group of guys. You can watch and see: like the guys love each other, and they’ve got a great feel for the game.”
