Former Chiefs running back Akeem Hunt leads the AAF in rushing yards after Week 1

The former Chiefs running back is getting another opportunity at Pro Football.

I will be honest: I didn’t think the Alliance of American Football (AAF) would be a thing.

But through one week, it appears to be catching on, and one of the league’s top performers of the week happens to be a former Chiefs running back.

It’s Akeem Hunt, who spent 2017 with the Chiefs primarily as a kick returner but was eventually waived with an injury settlement that offseason.

Now, apparently healthy and in the AAF as a member of the Orlando Apollos, Hunt leads the league in rushing yards with 73 on 10 carries. Hunt’s Apollos defeated the Atlanta Legends, 40-6.

Hunt joined CBS Sports’ Bill Reiter on Reiter’s Block to talk about his experience.

“It felt great just to be back playing on a football field,” Hunt said, via CBS Sports. “Coming off of an injury, for me, just me speaking for myself, it felt great being back on the field. Being a part of a team that loves to win as you can see and just being a part of a team that has a great coaching staff that loves to put points on the board and just to drive up the enthusiasm of all our players and the motivation that goes in that people don’t see or the fans don’t see through our practice or whatnot—all the people coming together just to build this league, it speaks volumes for everybody that’s on the playing field that has so much passion for the game. Like [Reiter] said, football does not stop thanks to the Alliance league and thanks for uniting all of us together.”

Hunt and the Apollos take on the San Antonio Commanders this Sunday at 3 p.m. Arrowhead time. Former Chiefs cornerback De’Vante Bausby, who plays for the Commanders, is coming off a four-tackle, one-interception game.
