Chiefs beat Broncos 23-3: Complete game summary

On Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Denver Broncos 23-3 during a snowstorm in Arrowhead Stadium.

OFFENSE

First half

First drive: After the game began with a roughing the passer penalty against the Broncos, Patrick Mahomes completed a 10-yard pass to Sammy Watkins. After a short run from LeSean McCoy, Demarcus Robinson caught a pass for 13 yards. Then Mahomes completed a deep pass to Tyreek Hill for a 41-yard touchdown. Second drive: McCoy started the drive with a 10-yard run. After a short run and an incomplete pass, the Chiefs faced their first third down of the game, converting with an 11-yard pass to Travis Kelce. With the completion, Kelce gained his 1000th receiving yard for the fourth-straight season. A defensive pass interference call put the Chiefs into field goal range. They faced third down again a couple of plays later and converted with a 10-yard catch by Mecole Hardman. Fifth drive: The Chiefs started the half with a 9-yard pass Kelce. After a couple of short runs, the converted a third down with a 13-yard catch from Hill. Another deep completion to Kelce put the Chiefs into the red zone. Completions to Kelce and Blake Bell gave the Chiefs goal-to-go. Mahomes found Hill for a 5-yard touchdown pass of the day, and then hit Watkins in the end zone for a two-point conversion. Chiefs 23, Broncos 3

Sixth drive: Thompson started the drive with 1-yard run. After an incomplete pass, the Chiefs faced an early third down, but could not convert and punted for the first time in the contest.

Seventh drive: Thompson started the drive with a 12-yard run. A couple of plays later. Kelce caught yet another deep pass for 21 yards. Mahomes completed another deep pass to Bell for 30 yards — but on the very next play, threw an interception in front of Hill at the 1-yard line.

Eighth drive: The Chiefs faced third down early after a short run from Thompson and a short catch from Kelce. Hardman couldn’t hold on to the pass from Mahomes, and the Chiefs go three-and-out

Nine drive: Spencer Ware ran for a combined 12 yards in the first three plays of the drive.

DEFENSE

First half

First drive: On the first play of the game, running back Phillip Lindsay ran for 10 yards. Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu sacked Drew Lock to start the next set of downs. After a short run and a short pass, the Broncos punted.

Second drive: Lindsay ran for a gain of three yards to start the drive. The Broncos got another first down with a pair of short passes. With another completion of 10 yards a couple of plays later — and a 4-yard run by Royce Freeman — the Broncos were in Chiefs territory. But on the next third down, Alex Okafor sacked Drew Lock, forcing the Broncos to punt.

Third drive: The drive began with an incomplete pass. Freeman caught a pass for five yards on the next play, but the Broncos couldn’t convert on third down and punted.

Fourth drive: The Broncos started the drive with an incomplete pass from Lock and a short run from Lindsay. Lock converted with a 12-yard pass to Tim Patrick. After a short run and an incomplete pass, Lock completed another pass to Cortland Sutton for 10 yards, but it wasn’t enough for the first down. The Broncos went for it on fourth down — and Lock completed a deep pass to Noah Fant for 43 yards. But after a short run and two incomplete passes, the Broncos were forced to settle for a field goal. Second half

Fifth drive: The Broncos started the half with a 13-yard completion to Fant. After a dropped pass and a short run, the Broncos faced third down but could not convert.

Sixth drive: The Broncos started the drive with a 3-yard rush from Freeman. Lindsay ran for 13-yard gain to put the Broncos into the redzone. After an incompletion and a short run from Lindsay, the Broncos faced third down. A short pass to Freeman didn’t get the first down after a tackle from Mathieu, but a holding penalty helped the Broncos convert. Lock threw an interception on the next play to Juan Thornhill.

Seventh drive: Lock completed a short pass to Sutton, who ran for an additional 33 yards. An 8-yard run from Freeman put the Broncos into Chiefs territory. Lock completed a 9-yard pass to Sutton, but a bad run and an incomplete pass gave the Broncos another third-and-long. Lock threw an incompletion, forcing the Broncos to go for it on fourth down. Another incompletion forced a turnover-on-downs.

Eighth drive: Lock completed a pass of nine yards and then avoided a sack to throw an incompletion on the next play. Lock ran a QB sneak to convert on the third-and-short. Sutton caught another pass for 27 yards and a 7-yard pass from Lock put the Broncos into Chiefs’ territory. After three straight incompletions, the Broncos went for it again on fourth down and did not convert.

SPECIAL TEAMS

• Dustin Colquitt bobbled the snap on the first extra-point kick of the game. Getting to his feet, he went to his left hoping to find an open receiver, but ended up throwing it out of bounds near Anthony Sherman.

INJURIES

• Defensive end Alex Okafor left the game in the second quarter with a chest injury
• Safety Juan Thornhill left the game in the second quarter after colliding with Charvarius Ward. He returned to the game before the quarter concluded.
