Chiefs defeat Raiders 40-9: Complete game summary

The 8-4 Kansas City Chiefs defeated the 6-6 Oakland Raiders to tighten control of the AFC West

The Kansas City Chiefs blew out the Oakland Raiders 40-9 at Arrowhead Stadium to take an iron-grip on the AFC West.


OFFENSE


First half

First drive: The first play of the day for the Chiefs offense was an incomplete pass to tight end Travis Kelce. The Chiefs converted their first third down of the day with a short run to LeSean McCoy. On a second-and-long play while the Chiefs were in field goal range, Andy Reid challenged a non-pass interference call and lost. Patrick Mahomes converted on the following third down with a 17-yard pass to Tyreek Hill. A couple plays later, a quick screen pass to Darrel Williams gave the Chiefs their first score of the game. Chiefs 7, Raiders 0

Second drive: Despite a short field after a fumble recovery, the Chiefs were unable to convert the first set of downs, causing a turnover on downs.

Third drive: Pinned at their own 2-yard line, the Chiefs first play of the drive was a run for no gain. After on offsides penalty, Mahomes completed a 14-yard pass to Kelce. A few plays later the Chiefs failed to convert on third down and were forced to punt.

Fourth drive: The Chiefs started the drive with an incomplete pass and a short catch-and-run from McCoy. Mahomes converted o the following third down with a 13-yard pass to Hill. An 11-yard jump-ball catch from Kelce put the Chiefs in field goal range. A screen pass to Hill put the Chiefs into the red zone and Mahomes scrambled for 13 yards to get the touchdown. Chiefs 14, Raiders 0

Fifth drive: The Chiefs started the drive with a 7-yard reception from Kelce. Mahomes was sacked for the first time in the game on the following play. After an incompletion, the Chiefs were forced to punt.

Second half

Sixth drive: Mahomes ran the first play of the drive for four yards. A couple of plays later, converted with a short pass to Hill on third down. After a loss of yards on a run play and an incompletion, an unnecessary roughness call on the Raiders helped the Chiefs convert on the next third down. The Chiefs faced third down yet again on the drive, but failed to convert. Harrison Butker kicked a field goal. Chiefs 24, Raiders 0

Seventh drive: The Chiefs started the drive with 47-yard catch-and-run from Kelce. After two short gains in the red zone, Mahomes appeared to have thrown his third interception of the season when he was picked in the end zone, but during routine turnover review, officials decided the Raiders had committed pass interference. On the next play McCoy scored on a 3-yard touchdown run. Chiefs 31, Raiders 0

Eighth drive: The Chiefs started the drive with back-to-back runs from Darwin Thompson and converted on third down with an 11-yard pass to Kelce. A 7-yard pass to Anthony Sherman put the Chiefs into Raiders territory. After driving 45 yards in nine plays, the Chiefs made into into the red zone, but faced third down. An unnecessary roughness penalty allowed the Chiefs to convert that third down. Thompson was able to score on a 4-yard touchdown run. Chiefs 38, Raiders 3

Ninth drive: The Chiefs kneeled to end the game


DEFENSE


First half

First drive: The Chiefs defense was able to disrupt the Raiders first pass attempt of the game, but Raiders running back Josh Jacobs ran for 12 yards on the next play. After a couple more runs. Oakland faced their first third down of the day and converted. A few plays later, Chiefs safety Tyran Mathieu picked off Derek Carr.

Second drive: The Raiders first play of the drive was a long run to Josh Jacobs. After driving 47 yards in six plays, the Raiders faced third-and-8 and failed to convert. The Raiders punted.

Third drive: The first play of the drive was a 24-yard completion by Derek Carr. After three unsuccessful plays, the Raiders went for it on fourth-and-1, but safety Juan Thornhill made the tackle to hold the Raiders short.

Fourth drive: The Raiders found themselves facing third down early, but Jacobs converted with a 4-yard run. A of couple plays later, Thornhill grabbed the Chiefs’ second interception of the day and scored. Chiefs 21, Raiders 0

Fifth drive: The Raiders started this drive with a 35-yard run from Jacobs. After a 19-yard pass from Carr, the Raiders got into the red zone for the first time in the game. Frank Clark started the following set of downs with a tackle-for-loss, knocking the Raiders out of the red zone. Two incompletions later, the Raiders tried a field goal, but it was wide left.

Second half

Sixth drive: The Raiders started the drive with a couple of runs to get a first down. Two plays later, Chris Jones sacked Carr to force a third-and-14. Carr scrambled to keep the play alive, but ultimately threw it away, forcing a Raiders punt.

Seventh drive: The Raiders started the drive with a run from Jacobs for five yards. A few plays later, Tanoh Kpassagnon sacked Carr for a 10-yard loss, but a 19-yard pass from Carr brought them to third-and-short. On a fumbled snap, the Raiders failed to convert on third down, but then converted on fourth down. A 14-yard catch-and-run from Alec Ingold put the Raiders into the red zone, but they couldn’t convert the next set of downs, and settling for a field goal. Chiefs 31, Raiders 3

Eighth drive: The Raiders drove 75 yards in 10 plays to score their first touchdown of the game, but Charvarius Ward returned a blocked point-after for two points. Chiefs 40, Raiders 9


SPECIAL TEAMS


  • Chiefs LB Dorian O’Daniel recovered a fumble caused by CB Rashad Fenton
  • WR Mecole Hardman returned the first kickoff the Chiefs received for a reasonable gain


INJURIES


  • Chiefs CB Rashad Fenton had a hamstring injury and was doubtful to return
  • Chiefs RB Darrel Williams suffered a non-contact leg injury and was questionable to return
  • Chiefs DE Frank Clark sustained a shoulder injury and was questionable to return
