The game

For Week 10, the Kansas City Chiefs travel to Nashville to face the Tennessee Titans. Kickoff is set for Noon (Arrowhead Time). The game will be broadcast on CBS — locally on KCTV/5.

The Chiefs begin a two-game road trip atop the AFC West with a 6-3 record, coming off a 26-23 defeat of the Minnesota Vikings last Sunday in Arrowhead Stadium. The Titans are tied with the Jacksonville Jaguars for last place in the AFC South with a 4-5 record. Last Sunday, they suffered a 30-20 road loss to the Carolina Panthers.

The Chiefs offense is expected to be led by reigning NFL MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who is expected to return returns after missing two games with the dislocated kneecap he suffered in the Week 7 defeat of the Denver Broncos. Even after giving way to backup Matt Moore for two games, Mahomes is tied for seventh place in touchdown passes for the season and is second only to Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson in passer rating.

Seventh-year veteran Ryan Tannehill will be starting his fourth game leading the Titans offense after displacing Marcus Mariota as the starter in Week 7. Under Tannehill, the Titans defeated the Los Angeles Chargers 23-20 and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 27-23 before losing last week’s game to the Panthers. For the season, Tannehill has completed 84 of 117 passes for 980 yards, six touchdowns and four interceptions — good for a passer rating of 99.7. That’s a higher rating than he achieved in any of his six seasons playing for the Miami Dolphins.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid is in his 21st year as a NFL head coach — his seventh with the Chiefs. He now owns the best head-coaching record in franchise history, but has often been stymied by the Titans since his arrival in Kansas City. Reid has lost three straight to the Titans. As head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles from 1999 through 2012, Reid dropped four straight to the Titans.

But this will be the first time Titans head coach Mike Vrabel will have faced Reid as a head coach. Now in his second year running the Titans, Vrabel was hired just two weeks after the Titans defeated the Chiefs 22-21 in the first round of the 2017 postseason; previous head coach Mike Mularkey wore out his welcome in Tennessee after being defeated by the New England Patriots 35-14 in the next round. Vrabel spent 14 seasons as an NFL linebacker for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Patriots and Chiefs — where he spent his last two seasons.

Now that the franchise is in its third decade in Tennessee, it’s easy to forget that it was once called the Houston Oilers — one of the AFL’s original eight teams. So the Chiefs have a long history against the team — one that includes not only the 2017 playoff loss, but the thrilling 28-20 win over the Oilers in the divisional round of the 1993 playoffs, the 1992 game in which Warren Moon threw for 505 yards against Kansas City and the famous 20-17 double-overtime victory that gave the Chiefs the 1962 AFL championship.
