Patrick Mahomes spent his bye week at Chiefs’ facility

Mahomes took full advantage of an opportunity to self-scout.

The Kansas City Chiefs take on the Oakland Raiders on Sunday — the first game after their bye week. Their quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, spent his week off not by traveling to his hometown of Tyler, Texas, but instead staying in Kansas City.

“I was up here pretty much every single day except maybe for the day of my gala,” said Mahomes on Wednesday. “It was a good week to get back and see how the season has went with the highs and the lows and understand what we need to do in order to be better. It goes with the day-by-day process, and you have to do that as the season goes on.

“Having a full week where you aren’t necessarily preparing, even though you are preparing a little bit for Oakland, you can kind of really look at yourself and understand what you need to get better at.”

So that is what Mahomes — who has more than 2,800 yards, 19 touchdowns and two interceptions in nine games played — did. He looked deeper into the film to find things he can improve.

“The biggest thing is just staying within myself and keeping my footwork where it was at the beginning of the year,” said Mahomes. “Not getting too wild or two feet going everywhere. I think the better I am fundamentally, the better I can kind of operate the offense.”

On Sunday, Mahomes and the Chiefs face a depleted Raiders defense, and our own Matt Lane is predicting an offensive party.

“We’re excited for the opportunity to get to play at Arrowhead,” added Mahomes. “We haven’t been here in a while. I haven’t played here in what seems like two months now, so I’m excited to play in front of our fans and against a great opponent.”
