The game
The Kansas City Chiefs take on the Los Angeles Chargers in an AFC West matchup on Monday Night Football from Mexico City. Kickoff is set for 7:15 p.m. The game will be carried on ESPN — locally on KMBC/9.
The Chiefs are leading the AFC West with a 6-4 record, coming off a last-minute 35-32 loss to the Tennessee Titans in Week 10 — their fourth loss in their last six games. The Chargers are third in the division with 4-6 mark — and are also coming off a narrow, last-minute loss: a 26-24 defeat at the hand of the Oakland Raiders. The Chargers have also lost four of their last six games.
After missing two games with a dislocated kneecap — and passing for 446 yards and three touchdowns in his return against the Titans — Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes says he hasn’t felt this good since Week 1 of the season, when he suffered an ankle injury that nagged him through the next six games. But even after missing two games, Mahomes is still ranked sixth in passing yards.
Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers heads that list with 2,816 yards. Now in his 16th NFL season, Rivers has been named to the Pro Bowl eight times — including the last three seasons. So far this season, however, his touchdown pass percentage is the lowest in his career. Still, he remains a dangerous opponent. He’s been credited with two game-winning drives and a fourth-quarter comeback in 2019.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid is in his seventh season with the team and is the only one in franchise history to notch three consecutive AFC West championships. The Chiefs have been to the playoffs in five of Reid’s six seasons. The Chargers’ Anthony Lynn is in his third season as the team’s head coach. Last season, he led the Chargers to 12-4 record — the team’s best since 2009 — and its first playoff appearance since 2013. He has compiled a regular-season record of 25-18 with the Chargers.
The two franchises have a long history, having both been among the eight teams comprising the original American Football League in 1960 — and have been division rivals since the beginning. Three of the last 15 meetings between these teams have been decided in overtime; three others were won by three points or less. The latter includes the most recent matchup — a 29-28 Chargers victory on Thursday Night Football during Week 15 last season — which was decided on a touchdown pass (and two-point conversion) with just four seconds remaining in the game.
