Titans stun Chiefs 35-32: complete game summary

The Kansas City Chiefs were upset by the Tennessee Titans 35-32 at Nissan Stadium on Sunday.

OFFENSE

First half

First drive: Quarterback Patrick Mahomes seemed to throw an interception on the first play of the game, but the play was overturned after further review. Mahomes followed up the near-interception with a 10-yard completion to wide receiver Sammy Watkins. The Chiefs converted their first third down of the game a couple of plays later with a 19-yard pass to Tyreek Hill. A 16-yard completion to Travis Kelce and a 7-yard gain from Hill put the Chiefs into the red zone. Second drive: The first play of the drive was nullified by an offensive holding penalty. Two plays later, pass interference followed by another holding penalty was called on the offense to push the Chiefs back after getting great field position. Mahomes completed a couple of passes to get back some yardage, but the penalties were too much to overcome and the Chiefs settled for a field goal. Chiefs 10 Titans 0

Third drive: Williams took the first carry of the drive for nine yards. Mahomes overthrew a couple of deep passes to Hill and Watkins and the Chiefs were forced to punt.

Fourth drive: The Chiefs drove 41 yards in six plays, but a fumble from Williams was returned for a Tennessee touchdown. Titans 13 Chiefs 10

Fifth drive: The first play of the drive was an incompletion from Mahomes, but he followed it up with four straight completions on the drive. Mahomes was sacked for the first time, then offensive linemen Mitchell Schwartz and Martinas Rankin went down with injuries. Second half

Seventh drive: The Chiefs converted an early third down with a 9-yard pass to Hill. The Chiefs failed to convert on their next third-down attempt, but a holding penalty gifted them a first down. Ninth drive: Williams started the drive with a 6-yard carry. A few plays later the Chiefs faced third down and a mid-air pass from Mahomes to wide receiver Mecole Hardman went for 63 yards and a touchdown. Chiefs 29 Titans 20

Tenth drive: The Chiefs started the drive with a 10-yard run from Williams. A couple of plays later, a 39-yard pass to Hill put the Chiefs in field goal range. But Hill dropped back-to-back passes, and the Chiefs are forced to kick a field goal. Chiefs 32 Titans 27

Eleventh drive: Two running plays and a pass play that turned into a sack forced fourth down, but a bad snap and a intentional grounding call gave the Titans possession.

Twelfth drive: A 23-yard reception to Robinson and a couple of short passes put the Chiefs in field goal range, but the field goal was blocked to end the game.

DEFENSE

First half

First drive: Running back Derrick Henry’s first run of the game went for no gain, but he gained seven yards on the following run. On third down Chris Jones got a strip-sack to give the Chiefs possession deep in the Titans territory.

Second drive: The Titans’ first completion of the game lost three yards, but their second gained 20. The Titans faced their second third down of the game, and QB Ryan Tannehill was sacked again for a big loss. The Titans punted.

Third drive: Tannehill threw a 52-yard pass to Kalif Raymond to start the drive. A pass to Jonnu Smith gave the Titans first-and-goal. A short pass to Anthony Firkser put the Titans on the board Chiefs 10 Titans 7

Fourth drive: The drive started with an illegal hands to the face penalty on the Chiefs, but the defense rallied and forced the Titans to punt with 20 seconds left in the half.

Second half

Fifth drive: The first play of the half was a 4-yard run from Henry. Back-to-back penalties forced the Titans into a third-and-long situation. They failed to convert and punted.

Sixth drive: Three plays into the drive, Henry ran for a 68-yard touchdown. Titans 20 Chiefs 19

Seventh drive: The Titans converted on their first third down of the drive with a run to Henry. Shortly after, Jones got his second sack of the day thanks to good coverage in the secondary. The Titans failed to convert the third-and-long and were forced to punt.

Eighth drive: The Titans faced third-and-long early in the drive, but a 12-yard scramble from Tannehill gave the Titans the first down. A 17-yard pass to A.J Brown put the Titans in the red zone, and a couple of rushes from Henry gave the Titans the score. Chiefs 29 Titans 27

Ninth drive: The Titans started the drive with a 14-yard run from Henry. A couple of plays later, they faced the first third down of the drive. Frank Clark got his first sack of the game to force fourth down. The Titans failed to convert on the following foruth-and-17 pass attempt.
