The game

Note: In the United States, Daylight Savings Time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday. Don’t forget to set your clocks back one hour on Saturday night, so you’ll be in sync with the NFL on Sunday.

The Minnesota Vikings visit Arrowhead Stadium for a Week 9 game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Kickoff is set for 12 noon (Arrowhead Standard Time). The game will be broadcast on Fox — locally on WDAF/4.

The Chiefs lead the AFC West with a 5-3 record but are coming off their third consecutive home loss: a 31-24 defeat at the hands of the Green Bay Packers last Sunday night. The Vikings are right behind the Packers in the NFC North with a 6-2 record, coming in to Sunday’s game with a four-game winning streak — most recently a 19-9 win over the Washington Redskins.

The Chiefs offense — normally led by 2018 MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes — will likely feature veteran backup Matt Moore while Mahomes continues to recover from the dislocated kneecap he sustained in the Week 7 game against the Denver Broncos. Against the Packers on Sunday, Moore was surprisingly effective — completing 24 of 36 passes for 267 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Now in his eighth NFL season, 31-year-old Kirk Cousins is at the midpoint of what might be his best career season. The Vikings quarterback leads the NFL in completion percentage (72.1%) and yards per attempt (9.3). He’s thrown 13 touchdown passes and only three interceptions this season — and possesses a passer rating of 115.2. That’s second only to Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid may be the franchise’s 13th head coach, but he hasn’t been unlucky in Kansas City. He already has the best coaching record in franchise history and is the only head coach who has lead the team to three straight division championships. Viking head coach Mike Zimmer became the team’s ninth head coach in 2014 and is serving in his sixth season at the helm of the team. The Vikings have won two division championships during Zimmer’s tenure.

For the second consecutive week, the Chiefs are hosting a former Super Bowl opponent at Arrowhead. The Chiefs lost to the Green Bay Packers — their Week 8 opponent — in Super Bowl I, and defeated the Vikings 23-7 in Super Bowl IV. The two teams have played only 11 regular-season games since then, with the Chiefs winning six of them. Their last meeting was during Week 6 of 2015 in Minnesota, when the Chiefs fell to 1-5 on the season after losing 16-10. But the Chiefs would go on to win 11 straight games — including their first playoff win since 1993.
