Mellinger Minutes: Mahomes, Chiefs’ defense, Earl Thomas, Mondesi and, um, more Mahomes | The Kansas City Star

The problem becomes in compensation. Because if Thomas is unhappy with his current contract with the Seahawks, it seems logical he’d remain unhappy with that contract somewhere else. Maybe he wants an extension to be part of a trade, but either way, the Chiefs should be stingy about giving up major draft capital for an expensive, unhappy player whose contract is about to expire.

The 5 best play designs of the 2018 NFL season (so far) | For the Win

Patrick Mahomes fakes a handoff to the back while simultaneously flipping it to Tyreek Hill streaking across the formation. The offensive line takes a step to its right, which makes the defense think they’re running an outside zone to the right. That gives the blockers a good angle to seal off the defense for the play in the other direction. With Hill’s speed, all he needs is that second of hesitation by the defense to score.

Offensive player rankings, Week 4: Todd Gurley takes No. 1 spot | NFL.com

3. Patrick Mahomes

Heading into Week 3, I hoped Mahomes would extend plays with his legs, and he certainly did that, specifically on one play in the second quarter. On third-and-goal at the 4-yard line, Mahomes scrambled left then right -- running a total of 35.7 yards before making the throw, per Next Gen Stats -- and fired an absolute dart to Chris Conley in the back of the end zone. He did this sort of thing all the time at Texas Tech, and it’s so fun to watch. If I’m a defensive coordinator with the Chiefs on my schedule, I’m nervous.

NFL Competition Committee members reportedly uncomfortable with roughing the passer calls | CBS Sports

According to NFL.com’s Judy Battista, some members of the competition committee are “uncomfortable” with the roughing the passer penalties we’ve seen thus far, most notably the Clay Matthews penalty during the Packers’ tie with the Vikings in Week 2. Battista reported that there will be a discussion next week, but members are “unsure” if immediate changes will be made. ESPN’s Dan Graziano reported something similar, confirming that some members are concerned and that there is a call scheduled. Changes aren’t expected to come this year, Graziano added.

So we both know what we’re going to do.
