Report: Chiefs to work out cornerback Bashaud Breeland on Tuesday

The former Redskin is reported healthy after failing a physical last March

NFL: Oakland Raiders at Washington Redskins Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

According to ESPN’s Rob Demovsky - a longtime Green Bay Packers reporter - former Washington Redskins cornerback Bashaud Breeland could be visiting the Kansas City Chiefs on Tuesday.

Breeland, 26, was drafted by the Redskins out of Clemson in the fourth round (102nd overall) in 2014. He started 58 games for Washington, and never fewer than 14 games a season. He has eight career interceptions.

Breeland was suspended for one game of the 2015 season after an August 2014 arrest for possession of marijuana. He also suffered a sprained MCL during training camp that season.

As Demovsky noted, Breeland became a free agent after his three year, $24 million deal with the Carolina Panthers - which reportedly included $11 million in guarantees - was voided this past spring when he failed Carolina’s physical exam. Breeland had suffered a cut to his foot on a visit to the Dominican Republic, and it had become infected prior to the physical.

Now that he is healthy, he is reported to be generating interest from multiple teams. It seems like a good bet that he will not sign a deal with the Raiders before leaving Oakland, as the Chiefs currently have more cap space to work with than the Raiders, and given what we know, Breeland may be seeking a richer deal than the Raiders might be able to afford.

Arrowhead Pride’s Matt Lane reports that his Carolina sources say Breeland is mostly a zone cornerback, but one who plays very physical. He doesn’t have great hips, but is pretty smart reading the field.

Should the Chiefs sign Breeland, we could expect he would be used as depth at the cornerback position - which brings up the possibility that in 2018, we could conceivably see snaps with three former Redskins in the secondary: Kendall Fuller, David Amerson and Breeland.
