The Kansas City Chiefs have signed 2018 sixth-round cornerback Tremon Smith, according to the NFL’s transactions report.
The Chiefs selected Smith out of Central Arkansas with the 196th overall pick of the NFL Draft. Smith, who had a nice rookie minicamp, spoke about the importance of playing special teams in year one on Sunday.
“Rookies make their names on special teams their first few years so I am willing to do whatever it takes on special teams,” Smith, who initially played as a quarterback and later wide receiver before switching to conrerback, said. “Moving from offense to defense, I want that ball in my hand. Every time I get the ball in my hand I am trying to score.”
Chiefs general manager Brett Veach had many good things to say about Smith during the team’s post-draft conference call.
“The guy had tremendous production,” Veach said, “really has a nose for the football. Now just elevating from Central Arkansas up to the next level will be an adjustment but the guy ran 4.3, he’s got really good hips, change of direction. All of the physical attributes that you look for in a corner I think he possesses. So we really like his skill set and we think he has a chance to develop into a player.”
Tryout signees
At least three tryout players made the Chiefs Monday afternoon.

Reaves is a cornerback from Villanova.
Reaves’ NFL.com draft profile: “Reaves has good size and toughness and shows pretty good awareness from zone, but his lack of athletic ability and closing burst make it hard for him to make plays on the ball in any coverage. Reaves may get a look at safety, but he could be a longshot to make a roster.”
LB Rob McCray
JR Sports @JRSportsEnt client Rob McCray @RobMc_47 makes it official today signing his contract with the @Chiefs . He enjoyed Rookie Mini Camp. Keep your eye on this young man. He has a great attitude! @TheChiefsWire #Chiefs #Chiefskingdom pic.twitter.com/fC6hBalooQ
