The first signing was fourth-round safety Armani Watts, who the Chiefs selected with the No. 124 overall pick. The Texas A&M product was held out of the final two days of rookie minicamp last weekend due to a shoulder bruise.
The injury was “nothing serious,” per Chiefs head coach Andy Reid.
SB Nation’s flagship site has called Watts “the most clutch player in the NFL Draft.”
The second signing announced Monday was that of sixth-rounder Kahlil McKenzie, who the Chiefs selected with the No. 198 overall pick after trading up with the New England Patriots.
McKenzie, who played defensive tackle at the University of Tennessee, will switch to offensive guard with the Chiefs.
“This kid is going to look like a first-round pick,” Veach said of McKenzie after the draft. “If you didn’t know that he wasn’t an offensive lineman and if you just kind of popped into all of the Pro Days and looked at Kahlil McKenzie and looked at all of the guys that went in round one, round two, round three and if you didn’t have any background, you didn’t watch any tape, you looked at just the Pro Day works, the size of this guy and how he moves and how he adjusts you would probably put him right at the top of your list.
“So that’s kind of what we’re dealing with here. A tremendously talented kid that may take some time but we’re certainly excited to take on that project.”
Watts and McKenzie join sixth-round cornerback Tremon Smith as draft picks that have been signed. Second-round linebacker Breeland Speaks, as well as third-rounders Derrick Nnadi and Dorian O’Daniel, remain unsigned.
