PODCAST: Good news and bad news for Chiefs after NFL Draft night one

New, comments
NFL: NFL Draft Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

Good news: There are several good players available on the board for the Chiefs at positions of need, some day-one reaches have helped the Chiefs be in position for better value on Friday and the Raiders reached for a boom-or-bust offensive tackle in Kolton Miller.

Several positive things happened for the Chiefs on Thursday night. Five quarterbacks, five offensive linemen, three running backs, two wide receivers and a 25-year-old tight end went off the board in the first night. There are players no one expected to be there still on the board, and three players outside my top 50 were selected early. Things are looking up for the Chiefs’ ability to get value and, should they trade up, they have a shot at round one talent.

Bad news: North Carolina State EDGE Bradley Chubb is a Bronco and Florida State safety Derwin James is a Charger. Denver and Los Angeles both made excellent choices finding terrifying talent and upside. No one expected Chubb or James to be available when the AFC West foes were on the clock. Denver has the sidekick and eventual successor to Von Miller, and Los Angeles added another weapon to their secondary. That is the only thorn in the Chiefs’ side to this point in the draft, but it’s a significant one.

The Chiefs still have a variety of ways they can approach Friday. They could look to maneuver for one of the top-tier talents still available or wait until 54 to get the best value on the board. Fans should be hoping for another run on offensive line, and that’s entirely possible. Early talks have been that teams in the 30s may still prioritize lineman. That should be welcomed at this point. Finish the run on interior offensive line, and look for a developmental prospect at the position on day three. However it plays out and the direction they choose, I expect them to be able to get a solid player.
