Setting aside history, other factors portend you wanting to be early on the Mahomes’ train. The offensive core is mostly intact, with Travis Kelce, Tyreek Hill, and Kareem Hunt still there (players that weren’t a big part of Mahomes only start against Denver in week 17, when he still averaged over 8 yards per attempt playing with backups). The team added Sammy Watkins to that mix.
No coaches were better at squeezing every drop of talent out of their offensive personnel last year than Reid and his long-time disciple, and a significant piece of that was the way both staffs deployed their game-breaking tight ends. Even with speedster Tyreek Hill in the fold, tight end Travis Kelce was undeniably the Chiefs’ most dynamic playmaker in the passing game. The three-time Pro Bowler caught 83 passes last season, the most in the league at his position.

Joe Montana - Kansas City Chiefs
Joe Cool was the face of the NFL during the 1980s, which made San Francisco and the 49ers the center of the football universe. Injuries and the unavoidable presence of Steve Young prompted Montana's Niners exit, which led to a solid two-year starter for the Chiefs. Montana provided some vintage moments with his second team and even guided K.C. to the AFC Championship Game in 1993. Still, Montana in 49ers red and gold is one of the iconic looks for any football player, ever. Even Chiefs fans will admit to this.
Andy Reid is breaking in new starting quarterback Patrick Mahomes with a brutal stretch early in the season. It starts with the Chargers and Steelers in consecutive road games. The first home game, against the rising 49ers, isn't easy, with the Jaguars on deck at Arrowhead. The Broncos and Patriots make it four away games in the first six weeks.

John Dorsey’s new team goes up against John Dorsey’s old team. Todd Haley’s offense goes up against Todd Haley’s old team. Mitchell Schwartz’s new team goes up against Mitchell Schwartz’s old team. You get the gist.
At Kansas City Chiefs, Sunday, Dec. 9, 1 p.m.: The Ravens will get an up-close look at new Chiefs starting quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who takes the reins of an explosive offense that includes Kareem Hunt, Sammy Watkins, Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce. It’s the latest matchup between Harbaugh and his longtime boss in Philadelphia, Andy Reid.
The Jaguars’ other two road games prior to their Week 9 bye are at Kansas City (1 p.m., Oct. 7) and Dallas (4:25 p.m., Oct. 14), where they will face former receiver Allen Hurns and try to slow running back Ezekiel Elliott for the first time. The new-look Chiefs will turn to quarterback Patrick Mahomes to lead an offense that includes running back Kareem Hunt, tight end Travis Kelce and receivers Sammy Watkins and Tyreek Hill.
"Like I said, I did not want to leave my team hanging. We was on a good roll. We had just beat New England, Philly. I couldn't miss out on that, but unfortunately -- well, fortunately now because I feel awesome."
Around the league
Judy Battista takes a look at the 2018 NFL schedule, which frontloads and spotlights compelling rematches and comebacks -- like those of Deshaun Watson and Carson Wentz.
To determine strength of schedule in 2018 I am using a blend of Super Bowl LIII future odds from the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook coupled with the over/under win totals set by online sportsbook 5Dimes. By this method, the Patriots’ opponents are expected to win between seven and eight games, on average, with just two, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Green Bay Packers, estimated to win 10 or more games during the season.
Mike Mayock reveals his final position-by-position rankings for the 2018 NFL Draft. There's movement across the board, including a new No. 1 wide receiver and linebacker.
Elway said Denver has given first-round grades to no more than four quarterbacks, according to Troy Renck of ABC Denver. USC's Sam Darnold, UCLA's Josh Rosen, Wyoming's Josh Allen and Oklahoma's Baker Mayfield are generally considered the draft's top four prospects at the position.
Nobody has ever produced an accurate seven-round mock draft. So why have they become a staple of NFL coverage?
In case you missed it at Arrowhead Pride
Let’s talk about the Chiefs 2018 schedule where they have five primetime games and open up in Los Angeles and close at Arrowhead.
The best game of the year
Let’s start here with the best game of the season. That would be Sunday Night Football against New England. The Chiefs will be playing the Patriots in Week 6 so it should be a good matchup in the middle of the season. Last year the Chiefs stunned the NFL with a win in Foxboro. This year, it’ll be Mahomes vs. Brady.
ESPN’s Steve Muench is identifying day one, two and three prospects that are good targets for each team. Because the Chiefs don’t have a day one pick, he doled out two prospects that make sense for the Friday session.
