Free agency rumor links Chiefs to DT Star Lotulelei

The NFL’s free agency period is a time for rumors. A bunch of players will be hitting the market and will be available to be signed by a bunch of teams so you get a lot of NFL folks talking about different players they like and then those people talk to the media and BOOM! You have a free agency rumor.

Tony Pauline reports that the Chiefs and the Texans are two teams who have shown interest in Star Lotulelei, the Panthers defensive tackle that’s slated for free agency on March 14.

The Chiefs lost Dontari Poe a year ago and appear set to lose Bennie Logan at the nose tackle position this year. The Chiefs could use more help on the defensive line, especially if Allen Bailey ends up being a cap casualty (which is just salary cap speculation, no reports there).

The Chiefs will be pushing $30 million in cap space if all these moves that have been reported (like the Alex Smith trade) end up going down so they can clearly afford a player like Lotulelei if they want.

How much will he cost? SB Nation’s Panthers blog, Cat Scratch Reader, suggests a $10-11 million per year deal could do it.
