The KC Star’s Terez Paylor reported shortly before free agency on Wednesday that KC Chiefs LB Dee Ford likely could not pass a physical right now. That was notable because his fifth-year option the Chiefs picked up for next season is guaranteed for injury only, meaning it’s guaranteed if he’s injured. So he’s coming back (as he probably should have anyway).
Chiefs GM Brett Veach commented on Ford’s progress Wednesday after back surgery a few months ago.
“Dee’s doing very well,” Veach said. “He had the back and I spoke to (Chiefs trainer) Rick (Burkholder) last week and I think he’s going to be 100 percent come April 1 so we should see him out there at OTAs. I actually saw him today in the locker room. He looks great and I think he’s going to have a big year. I really do.”
There’s reason to think Ford could have a big year. He is entering a contract year. If he puts up a big season, he will receive a monster payday next year. I mean, Anthony Hitchens got $20+ million guaranteed and he doesn’t even rush the passer. Pass rushers get paid and Ford will too if he has a good year.
I love this situation for the Chiefs because in the ideal world they get a big 2018 season out of Ford and you either have a good pass rusher to re-sign or you let him go make a bunch of money from someone else and recoup the comp pick. There’s reason to hope the pass rush is better next season ....
