Alex Smith pens goodbye letter to Kansas City

Alex Smith is still technically the Chiefs quarterback but that will change Wednesday when the trade to Washington becomes official. Alex is saying his goodbyes to Kansas City in this letter in The Players Tribune.

He said going into last season he knew it was likely the end for him in Kansas City.

Going into this past season, I pretty much knew.

I mean, I had to know, right? With everything I’ve experienced so far in my career, I probably understand the “business” of football as well as anyone. And trading up to take a quarterback in the draft isn’t exactly a subtle move as to the future of a franchise. It was pretty obvious what that meant for me.

You need to read the whole thing. It’s as classy as you’d expect from Alex Smith. I will miss him in Kansas City too. I am glad they are moving onto Patrick Mahomes and all that brings but I don’t want to forget how nice it was knowing you were good for 10 wins a year. That was a good feeling.

Alex wrote that the trade talks started during Super Bowl week with several suitors. He said there was a sense of relief when the trade went down and a sense of pride looking back on his time in Kansas City.

It’s going to be different in Kansas City next season.
