Dontari Poe expected to hit free agency again

If Muhammad Wilkerson is too rich for the KC Chiefs blood in free agency then maybe they can go back to an old friend and that would be Dontari Poe, who left the Chiefs for Atlanta in free agency last year. Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff said he does not think the Falcons will be able to bring Poe back this year.

Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff indicates two-time Pro Bowl DT Dontari Poe will play elsewhere next year after Poe played on a one-year, $8 million contract last season. “Did a heck of a job for us this year,” Dimitroff said. “We really liked his impact for us — especially in the run game — understanding that it may be a one-year deal. We’re in a spot right now where there’s a very good chance that he’s going to go to free agency and land a very lucrative deal. So we appreciate what he has done with us.”

Yeah, I’d be curious about a Poe reunion. I’m nervous about spending a ton of money on any 330-pound player for fear of injury, especially one with a history of a back injury. After signing a one-year deal in Atlanta, I gotta think Poe is looking to cash in after a solid season in Atlanta. I am interested in bringing him back but I think the Chiefs might be looking to get younger there.

From the Falcons perspective, that was a great signing last year. You got him on a fair contract (one-year, $8 million) and now you could get a mid-round compensatory pick back next year if he does cash in some place. Not a bad investment.
