We weren’t the only ones surprised by the timing of the Alex Smith trade. Patrick Mahomes and his agent Leigh Steinberg were too.
Steinberg joined Soren Petro on 810 WHB from radio row this week and talked about how they found out about the trade.
“Our sense of it was we thought something like this might happen closer to the draft,” Steinberg said. “I went back to my hotel room last night and Patrick was a backup and about a half hour later the Mahomes era began. He had no notice of it either. A general sense that they were probably moving in that direction but he hadn’t talked to anybody from the team so I sorta told him.”
I didn’t expect them to loop Mahomes into the trade discussions or anything but it’s interesting that he didn’t have a heads up it was coming. Imagine if you’re him and you’re wondering if 2018 is gonna be your year and then you hear about the trade. What a time to be alive.
