Pistol Pat and the Showtime Chiefs

Just some general thoughts after the Ravens game.

Pat Mahomes AKA Pistol Pat

I am starting to feel bad for some of the talking heads out there. The ones who do follow the game but don't have time to keep track of every up and coming player in every sport. They didn't get to spend the offseason falling asleep to "Patrick Mahomes vs....." youtube videos and the "every throw" highlights from the 2017 Denver game. They see Pistol Pat sprinting to his right and throwing a dart 35 yards down field across his body to a guy with barely any separation and they think he got lucky. They think it's not sustainable. They think that the two interceptions he threw doing this against the Rams is the norm and the Ravens game was the outlier. Nope. This is what he does. The Rams game was Mahomes calibrating how quickly some of these NFL edge defenders can get to him on the sideline. We have been dreading the day when NFL defenses get enough game film to catch up to Pat. I think NFL defenses should be worried about what happens when Pat gets more experience against them and starts pulling away.

Spencer Ware Quietly Dominating

Big drop off from Kareem to Ware, right? Well, not really this week. 15 carries for 75 yards 0 TDs might not sound too impressive. Especially when you pair it with the weak outing last week against the Raiders. But then you add on the 54 yards receiving and the fact that we were going up against the Ravens defense and things come out a little more rosey. Bottom line, Spencer Ware moved the chains the way that we have relied on Kareem Hunt to do. It seemed like every other run was Ware getting to the second level and plowing over the first down marker. We won the time of possession battle against the Ravens. Not a single person would have put money on that coming into the week. In the last 3 games Baltimore had won the time of possession battle by an average of FIFTEEN minutes.

Demarcus Robinson Getting Into a Groove

Robinson is never going to be Sammy Watkins or Juju Smith-Schuster as a #2 wide receiver. But I could see a world where he comes along as the Steve Breaston to our Larry Fitz and Anquan Bolden. The primary reason for this is that he has flashed an ability to get open and an ability to make tough catches. It's the easy ones he isn't consistent with. But more importantly, Pat seems to like throwing to him. Just look at Pat's preseason games last year. Even when he wasn't coming down with them, Pat was tossing it up to Robinson whenever he had a step. The Titans game in particular where Robinson balled out for 127 yards and 3 highlight reel plays. And speaking of highlights plays, it was Robinson that Mahomes dropped the no-look dime to. Why? Because he knew that Robinson would finish his route. The same way that Robinson came back around and toe tapped in the back of the end zone against the Steelers. Pat trusts him and that's enough for me.

Chris Jones is the Best Chiefs Defensive Tackle Since Neil Smith

Sorry Glenn Dorsey, but it's true. Yes, I know he technically plays the 3-4 DE spot just like Neil did, but if I say D-lineman then you can pull Jared Allen and Tamba into the mix and it gets messy. They are defensive tackles. But Jones is the rare beast that we have been lacking for decades now. An interior disruptor. A guy who can just bull rush his way through a half-hearted double team, or come across the face of a heavy footed guard and get right into the opposing QBs face. 9 games with a sack in a row. Two massive sacks taken off the board in the first few weeks. The quickest sack of the season on Tom Brady of all people. Not enough is being said about this guy because everyone is in line waiting to give Aaron Donald praise, but Chris Jones is having an amazing season that should be noticed.
