Chiefs' Week 10 trended defensive snap counts

First, an admission - I missed this one live. I was at the Sporting KC playoff win. I've just been rewatching it today as I write this. The film is mainly making me feel bad for Rosen, I can't believe he was still standing at the end of all those hits.

As usual, to try to normalize numbers a bit, I've tied everything to a percentage of snaps per player. The exception is the last graph, which is an average number of players on the field from a position group for each snap. For example, if Play 1 has three cornerbacks on the field, and Play 2 has two cornerbacks on the field, that will average out to 2.5 cornerbacks per play.

Big thank you to the posters sunny D, Kevin Ruprecht, and chiggyxc for suggestions on how to visualize this information.

Chiefs D Line Snaps Wk 10

Nothing too crazy here. Derrick Nnadi was down a little bit, but not out of line with past weeks.

Chiefs OLB Snaps Wk 10

With the welcome return of Justin Houston, I was surprised to see Tanoh Kpassagnon still get some run as a backup to Dee Ford, with Breeland Speaks and Houston trading off quite a bit. This will be one to watch next week, as Houston looked like he was fully healthy, and we'll need every bit of pass rush to try to slow up the Rams.

Chiefs ILB Snaps Wk 10

Last week, it looked like inside linebacker by commitee, this week the committee was a man short and that effect was even more pronounced. It sounds like Reid is pretty confident that Anthony Hitchens will be back next week, but one has to admit that Dorian O'Daniel and Ben Niemann did an adequate job in his stead. It's worth noting that Reggie Ragland's usage was pretty steady even with Hitchens out.

Chiefs CB Snaps Wk 10

For the third week in a row, it's the same old story with the cornerbacks. Kendall Fuller and Steven Nelson are your starters, with Orlando Scandrick the reliable third man. Without an injury, this is shaping up to be a very boring graph over the year.

Chiefs Safety Snaps Wk 10

The big news at safety is a new name on the graph, as Daniel Sorensen returned from IR and saw substantial action in his first game back. The #LucasLocomotive was officially derailed, as Jordan Lucas registered 0 snaps on the week. It will be interesting to see how the three safeties split snaps going forward, as Sorensen was an every-down player in the past.

Chiefs Players Per Snap Wk 10

A big shift this week, with the safeties at their highest usage of the season and the inside linebackers at their lowest by a substantial amount. Over 40 percent of the time the Chiefs had three safeties on the field, something they were exploring the past several years. Hitchens sitting out could be part of the explanation, but with Sorensen back, I think you'll see three safety sets as a regular feature of the defense going forward.
