Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes off to historic start to season (projections) | NFL
Through eight games in 2018, the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback has thrown for 26 touchdowns, 2,526 yards, and a 115.3 passer rating.
Let’s put some of his stats into perspective with the help of the indefatigable NFL Research team.
Timing is everything: Chiefs’ defense gears up for sudden-change situations | The Wichita Eagle
Bob Sutton only knows one to build the wall, and no matter how the NFL tilts rules in the favor of offense or how much fans may grumble about the gaudy yardage totals put up by opponents, Sutton will stay the course — brick by brick.
The two signal callers square off again Sunday when Mayfield’s Cleveland Browns host Mahomes’ Kansas City Chiefs on the NFL stage.
In their 2016 matchup, Mahomes had seven total touchdowns while going for an NCAA-record 819 total yards of offense. Mayfield completed 27 of 36 passes for 545 yards and seven passing touchdowns in a 66-59 win for the Sooners.

2. Kansas City Chiefs (7-1, LW: 2)
The Chiefs gained 340 yards and scored 30 points Sunday. A good day for most mortal teams, but that was the Chiefs’ lowest yardage total of the season and tied for their second-lowest point total (the Broncos held them to 27 points in the first meeting). This offense might be unstoppable.
Chiefs don’t appear poised to pull off any deals before NFL’s trade deadline | Kansas City Star
All trading for this year ends at 3 p.m. Tuesday. Both publicly as well as privately, the Chiefs appear content to stand pat with the roster as it stands, the biggest additions likely to come via players returning from injury as opposed to via the trade market.
Sammy Watkins has his best day with the Chiefs | ESPN
Watkins was indeed held without a catch in Week 4 when the Chiefs also played against the Broncos. He played just 12 snaps in that game because of a sore hamstring.
Watkins made up for that on Sunday when he had his best game as a member of the Chiefs. Watkins set season highs in catches (eight), yards (107) and touchdowns (two) in the Chiefs’ 30-23 win.
Here’s what the NFL playoff picture looks like at the halfway point | SB Nation
The Chiefs have a two game lead for first place in the AFC West, though the Chargers are very much alive in the playoff hunt, too. The Texans are in first place in the AFC South, where they have a two game lead.
If the season ended today, these would be the AFC playoff seeds:
1. Chiefs (record: 7-1), (conference record: 6-1)

Browns fire Hue Jackson, promote Gregg Williams | NFL
Hue Jackson’s ignominious run as Cleveland Browns head coach has ended.
The franchise fired Jackson and offensive coordinator Todd Haley in a decision announced early Monday afternoon.
Although hardly dramatic, games broadcast on CBS, NBC and ESPN have seen between a 1-6 percent improvement over through the first eight weeks of the season, according to numbers provided to USA TODAY Sports by the networks.
NFL trade deadline tracker: Who might be moved? | NFL
Here’s a rundown of the notable trades that have been completed since the start of the season along with players who’ve been drawing interest in the trade market, according to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport and NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Mike Garafolo and Mike Giardi.
Ranking the 9 dumbest mistakes you might have missed from NFL Sunday in Week 8 | SB Nation
But we would like to highlight a few of the lowlights, those “what are you doooooiiiiing” brain farts that we saw around the NFL in Week 8. Here are the nine dumbest, courtesy of some NFL refs, coaches (Hue Jackson, obviously), and most of all, Jameis Winston.

Dee Ford is having his best season, and the Chiefs know it
In four of these, Ford was also able to strip the ball from the quarterback; two of those came against the Broncos on Sunday. Statistics say that when a ball is fumbled, both teams have an almost identical chance to recover it. That’s held true in Ford’s forced fumbles this season; not all of these strip-sacks have resulted in turnovers for the Chiefs.
“Hopefully Hitch will be OK,” Reid said. “I’m not saying that Hitch isn’t OK. We’ve done a couple of the preliminary things last night and we’re headed in the right direction although I’m sure he is going to be a little sore as we go.”
Clark Hunt on Eric Berry: “It literally is day to day”
“It’s no different than what you’ve heard from Andy (Reid) or Rick Burkholder,” Hunt said. “It literally is day to day. I do know that nobody’s working harder at his rehab than Eric. Eric is a young man who loves the game of football and wants to be out there on the field, and as soon as he feels that he’s ready, he’s going to be out there.”
