Why the Chiefs can cover the spread
Patrick Mahomes is how Kansas City can beat the number again Sunday night, as the team’s second-year quarterback continues to show why he is one of the best in the game. Despite throwing his first two interceptions of the year against the Jaguars, he still totaled more than 300 yards through the air for the fourth straight game and also rushed for a touchdown.
New England’s defense has been vulnerable through the air and surrendered 376 yards and four touchdowns to Blake Bortles in a 31-20 road loss at Jacksonville in Week 2. Bortles threw four picks last week versus the Chiefs.
Chiefs’ tip drill
A lot of people seemed to enjoy this joint effort from the Chiefs, but I gotta tell you ... it didn’t really do much for me. It took them a bit too long to get it going, then the execution was rather sloppy. Plus, this is NOTHING like the Nelly music video. But I will say I did enjoy the catch/spike combo to finish it off. Grade: C
You can use The Upshot’s playoff simulator to explore all of the Chiefs’ remaining paths to the playoffs — and the paths for every other team. You can explore other possibilities, like whether your team can get a first-round bye or win the division, right here:
And, yes, he has watched plenty of the contemporary tight end with whom he has often compared, Rob Gronkowski of the New England Patriots. Kelce said he doesn’t see the similarities, other than both are moved around the formation as their respective coaches search for the best matchups for 260-pound players who are difficult to cover.
Nagy gave Bears players the entire week off following their Week 4 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a move that was not contingent on his team winning. The importance of rest for players and coaches alike is something he took away from his time under Reid.
“We have to keep ourselves under control emotionally,” Reid said after the game. “When two good football teams play each other, you can’t let the emotions get to you. This is a team that is going to come n and be physical and try to push you around in your own place. You can’t do that either. You have to put your foot down and do it the right way. We have to learn from that.
Campbell, a 17-year-old senior at Raymore-Peculiar High School, posted a video on her Facebook page Monday asking the Kansas City Chiefs’ star quarterback to attend prom with her.
Around the league
Five weeks into the NFL season, now’s as soon as any time to guess who’s going to be out of a job first. In 2017, Ben McAdoo was the first to go when the Giants cut him loose in Week 13 for the team’s 2-10 record. A couple years before that, the Dolphins were much quicker to kick Joe Philbin to the curb after a 1-3 start to the 2015 season.
George Taliaferro, who in 1949 became the first African-American player to be drafted by an NFL team, died Monday night at age 91.
The former All-Pro has signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars, the team announced Tuesday. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reports it’s a one-year deal.
“I think it was a different time. Football was different then. Now, in some ways, pro football is more glorified college football. In some ways, the transition—it’s more similar than it used to be when I first started. Football now is removing some of the physical elements of the game. It’s more of a space game. You see a lot of college plays more in the pro game now than I remember when I started.”
They used to be considered safe picks, easy-to-identify future stars, the closest thing to guarantees in the NFL’s annual crapshoot player-selection process known as the draft.
But the reputation of offensive tackle prospects has been recently damaged after a string of high-caliber, early-round prospects flopped or have proven to be adequate at best with their respective pro teams.
The Giants had a list of them this week and, according to an NFL source, the league informed the Giants that Collins did not commit a penalty for making contact with a defenseless player when he broke up a pass for Devin Funchess early in the fourth quarter. Collins not only made a play on the ball, he actually got his hand on the ball before making incidental contact with Funchess.

We had plenty of indication that starting right guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif was headed to injured reserve, but rookie safety Armani Watts to injured reserve is a surprise.
For the second straight week, the pundits we’re tracking agree unanimously: the Los Angeles Rams and Kansas City Chiefs are 1-2 at the top of the NFL.
It’s our Monday
morningafternoon column, The Re-Up. In this column, I’ll write about some deeper thought I had about the last game and finish with some fun stuff to ponder at the article’s end. Check out last week’s column here.
