Early this morning KC Chiefs TE Travis Kelce was on the Dan Patrick Show and seemed, frankly, sad about the Alex Smith trade. You’d expect the sadness that his quarterback is gone but Kelce is an upbeat guy so it was noticeable that this trade was affecting him.
It’s Super Bowl week so that wasn’t Kelce’s only interview of the day. I’ve been following him on a number of media outlets today and slowly but surely he’s coming around on the reality that Alex is gone and Mahomes is coming in.
“I don’t think we miss a beat,” Kelce said on USA Today about playing with the young guy at quarterback. “Obviously, I’m looking at it with a lot of positive expectations even though the expectations are a little bit in question just because we don’t really know what to expect out of Pat. It’s going to be fun growing with him. That’s why all the older guys, all the veterans are on the team to help the young guys get into the game without losing a step.”
That feels like an honest answer — they don’t know what to expect out of Mahomes. Kelce said he’s never been in a huddle with Mahomes. He has played one game that counts in Week 17 and that game didn’t even really count.
It’s true. We don’t know what will happen. And that’s exactly why I’m so excited about this next era.
