One thing that struck me ever since the Chiefs drafted Patrick Mahomes is how dedicated to Alex Smith the rest of the locker room is. I don’t say that in an anti-Mahomes way but more of a positive Alex Smith way. Chiefs players loved that guy. I thought in the first year or two that it was this manufactured respect for the supposed leader of the team at that position but I learned over the years it was real. The locker room loved Alex and they respected the hell out of him. That’s evident in this note that Travis Kelce put out on Twitter.
Can’t say enough about the guy.... one of the best competitors and teammates I’ve ever been around. Someone who I owe a lot of my success to, and a guy that’s been a class act through all the ups n downs. Thanks for all the memories brotha! pic.twitter.com/OoGxBeOijY

We’re going to hear a lot about other Chiefs players and former players saying good things about Alex but this one from Kelce stands out to me. Kelce is going to be in KC for a while and had every reason to bond with Mahomes. And I’m sure he did. But Kelce, one of the biggest stars on the team, always went over the top supporting Alex. Mahomes has a big arm and the future is with him but Chiefs players legitimately looked up to Alex and I think that’s evident with this message from Kelce.
A few more reactions from Chiefs players on the trade...
Alex, you are the definition of a true leader and your professionalism helped me grow as a player. Good luck in Washington #kc @Chiefs #nfl #football

The ultimate leader of men on the field, and one of the best teammates you could possibly have in the locker room. I owe Alex a great deal for helping me learn how to be a professional. Wish you all the best! pic.twitter.com/wn1OB80N9M
