There’s no doubt about it. Alex Smith is making the rounds at the Super Bowl in Minneapolis.
He apparently will be on the popular podcast, Pardon My Take, later this week, and he joined the Dan Patrick Show Tuesday morning.
Patrick had no problem asking Smith where he thinks he will be playing next year, and Smith laughed at the question before telling Patrick he probably wouldn’t like his answer.
“I wish I knew,” Smith said. “I have a year on a contract in Kansas City. I wish I was in control of this thing. I wish I was the one that got to be able to do this. That’s just not the reality right.”
So Patrick followed up. If Smith was in control, what would he do?
“I love where I’m at,” Smith said. “I felt like we underachieved. Offensively last year, we did some awesome things. But who knows? I’ve been playing long enough. I’ve been through this before—the trade deal. I’m not naive to it. This is a crazy business, a lot of crazy stuff could happen.”
So with the rumors swirling about a trade the Cleveland Browns, Patrick asked if he was open to trade there.
“I haven’t even thought about that,” Smith laughed. “They’ve got nowhere to go but up. 1-31 over the last two years just sounds amazing.”
It’s not that Smith wouldn’t go to the Browns, but he’d prefer it would be somewhere with the pieces already in place around him.
“If [a trade] is the case, you want to somewhere you can have success,” he added. “Wouldn’t you?”
When it came to the Super Bowl, Smith said he will certainly have a rooting interest.
“From a personal standpoint, I really don’t like the Patriots,” Smith said. “And Doug Pederson and Nick Foles, a bunch of familiar faces on the other side. Doug used to be our OC, awesome guy. Nick is a great dude, so rooting for them for sure.”
Smith said he’d love to see the Patriots get beat.
Before the interview was over, Patrick asked Smith who he thought threw the longest deep ball in the NFL. Smith said he wasn’t sure, but when Patrick persisted, his answer spoke volumes.
“To be honest, Pat (Mahomes) can rip it,” he said. “As far as distance, pretty freakish.”
What a situation in Kansas City.
Smith also talked Tom Brady, what people say to him on the street in Kansas City and how he prepares game balls. Catch the full Alex Smith interview on Patrick’s podcast page here. The Dan Patrick Show airs on AT&T AUDIENCE Network - Channel 239 - Monday-Friday 8:00am - 11:00am CT.
