It’s going to be an active offseason if you like reading tweets and blog posts (you better like reading blog posts). There is going to be a bunch of speculation on Alex Smith from other teams. It’s still January and today’s Arrowheadlines linked to multiple stories of writers speculating about Alex Smith for the team they cover.
I read through this Q&A with Browns beat writer Mary Kay Cabot and she indicated in there a couple of times her belief that the Browns will go after Alex Smith. This isn’t a report quoting sources ... just what she thinks will happen.
Here’s one: “The Browns will acquire a veteran quarterback such as an Alex Smith and likely start the season with him. They will also probably draft a quarterback No. 1 overall and let him learn behind the veteran for awhile.”
And another: “Even if the Browns try to trade for Smith -- and I believe they will -- I think they’ll still draft a QB at No. 1.”
On the one hand, I wouldn’t want Alex Smith to go to a bad team. I like him and I want him to succeed if the Chiefs do end up trading him. On the other, the Chiefs were coming off a 2-14 season when Alex came to KC five years ago and look what happened. Things can change in a hurry.
