The Kansas City Chiefs special teams didn’t seem as good this year because they didn’t have as many of the big kick and punt returns as they did last year. However, according to one special teams ranking, the Chiefs were pretty darn good again last year.
Rick Gosselin of the Dallas Morning News does his annual special teams ranking for every team. This is one of those lists that all the media folks pay attention to and coaches do too. Chiefs special teams coach Dave Toub referenced Gosselin’s rankings at one point last season and those rankings say the Chiefs were the second best special teams unit in the league.
It takes into account 22 different categories. Gosselin noted how strong the Chiefs were in the kicking game with a league-high 41 field goals. That comes courtesy of Harrison Butker who was plucked off the Panthers practice squad in the first month of the season.
The Chiefs didn’t have Tyreek Hill returning kicks most of the year and most punters avoided him on punt returns so special teams weren’t as exciting this year but they were still pretty good.
