Arrowheadlines: Tom Brady talks Chiefs, Andy Reid vs. Bill Belichick is a rare matchup

Chiefs can look to their recent past for model on how to beat Patriots | ESPN

To win on Thursday night, the Chiefs don’t have to be reckless. They don’t have to run fake punts or try to convert on every fourth-down situation. But they’ll need to approach every one with that eye. They need to let Smith throw at unconventional times, if they’re in position to protect a late lead.

Chiefs vs. Patriots: 10 Stats to Know | Chiefs.com

They both currently rank in the Top 10 in NFL history in all-time wins by a head coach. Reid ranks 10th with 184, and Belichick ranks 4th with 263 (includes postseason).

They are the only two active NFL coaches inside the Top 25, and they have combined for 447 wins, which ranks among the most for any two coaches who have ever faced off against one another.

Patriots vs Chiefs: Tuesday injury report | Pats Pulpit

The rest of the limited participants project to be game day decisions. Particularly Nate Ebner and Matthew Slater are worth keeping an eye on giving the high quality of the Chiefs' special teams units. Losing two of their best kicking game players would therefore certainly be a blow to New England.

Belichick sweats unknowns as Patriots host Chiefs | The Kansas City Star

Told Reid had said “nobody does it better” than Belichick, Belichick said, “Feel the same way. … I respect the way he coaches his team. I respect the way they play. They’re always tough. I’ve had great battles with him.”

Yes, Belichick is 5-1 against Reid. But three of those victories are by a total of 13 points — including 24-21 in the 2005 Super Bowl and 27-20 in the 2016 playoffs.

Chiefs’ Kareem Hunt looking ‘to step up’ against Patriots | AP

“We’re going to do everything the same way,” Hunt said Tuesday at the team’s training facility. “I just got to step up and fill some big shoes.”

Belichick reveres legendary Chiefs coach Hank Stram | The Kansas City Star

“Dale, our football families are inter-connected all the way back to our dads — Great Lakes vs. Purdue in the mid-’40s. Hank was a great coach — a pioneer in the AFL, an innovator and a showman with flair to spare! Hanks’ involvement in football for decades made our game better!

“All the best to the Stram family.”

Mellinger Minutes: Chiefs, Royals, Mizzou, KU, K-State | The Kansas City Star

Thursday, at New England: Despite a, um, clear coaching advantage I’m thinking the Patriots on ring night with Roger Goodell to impress is a big ask. By the way, if I ever say something that stupid, that Reid is a better coach than Belichick, please punch me directly in the nose.

Chiefs vs. Patriots: These 3 reasons show why it will be so hard for KC to win | Arrowhead Pride

The NFL started doing this season opener where the defending champion hosts the first game on Thursday night in 2004. Since then, the home team has won every time except once: the Cowboys beat the Giants in 2012. (The next year, the defending champion Ravens played on the road due to a scheduling issue and lost the Broncos who hosted the game).

Tom Brady: Chiefs have “a lot of playmakers” on defense | Pats Pulpit

“They have playmakers,” the future Hall of Famer noted during a press conference yesterday when asked about what makes the unit so dangerous and productive in the turnover-department. “They're very explosive and really force the ball out of your hands quick because they get a good rush and then their playmakers in the secondary have eyes on the quarterback and they're trying to make plays, too.”

Bill Belichick Press Conference Transcript 9/5 | New England Patriots

Yeah, Andy’s a great coach, been with one and now two organizations. I respect the way he coaches his team. I respect the way they play. They’re always tough. We’ve always had great battles with them. I don’t think anybody’s – I can think of too many teams that have handled us better than the way they handled us in 2014. That was one game but there have been a lot of great competitive games going back to the ‘07 game here when he was in Philadelphia. I know Andy’s family. I have a lot of respect for him, his family, him personally and professionally. He’s one of the great coaches in this league.

Chiefs practice squad update: RB Akeem Hunt joining KC practice squad after Houston Texans cut him | Arrowhead Pride

I saw that Hunt was cut over the weekend and I remembered the name. So I went and looked it up and the Chiefs had interest in him before the 2015 draft and again in 2016 the Chiefs reportedly offered him a spot on their practice squad but he chose Houston.
