With Cairo Santos nursing an injury, Chiefs sign former Penn State kicker

The Kansas City Chiefs are preparing to be without K Cairo Santos in their preseason opener on Friday against the San Francisco 49ers. The Chiefs signed free agent K Sam Ficken to a deal on Tuesday and cut WR Corey Washington.

Don’t be too concerned about Santos, who is having a great camp. The Chiefs are saying this groin injury he has is just a minor deal and they’re signing this new kicker in case Santos can’t go on Friday.

If Santos didn’t practice and they already signed the new guy, I would say it’s a good sign that Santos won’t be playing in Friday’s game. He is their kicker and there is no competition so there is no reason to risk it.

As for Ficken, the name could sound a little familiar. He’s coming out of Penn State and actually went to the Chiefs rookie minicamp after the 2015 draft. He has no NFL game experience, however.
