NFL roster cuts 2017: What the Chiefs can expect this week

Looming for the Kansas City Chiefs is the 2017 NFL roster cut down weekend. The Chiefs will be cutting their roster from 90 to 53 players by this Saturday, September 2. That’s almost half the team cutting the pink slip. It will be a crazy week from here to Saturday.

(Update: Chiefs begin cut down week early with the release of LB Josh Mauga)

Here’s what you can expect this week:

Today-Wednesday: Chiefs are preparing for the preseason finale against the Titans on Thursday night.

Thursday: The Chiefs play the Titans at Arrowhead. Who didn’t play? Who played a lot? We will use the snap counts from this game to guess who is on the cutting block.

Friday: The Chiefs will probably start to make their cuts on this day. They need to make 47 roster so moves so this is probably a two-day process.

Saturday: Cut down day. The Chiefs have to be down to 53 players by 3 p.m. (Arrowhead Time). This is when all the action will take place. Simultaneously, 31 other teams are making their cuts. You will be surprised by a Chiefs cut.

Sunday: The Chiefs can create a practice squad made up of 10 players by 12 p.m. (Arrowhead Time). This will likely be composed almost entirely of players they cut the day before. On this day the Chiefs can also claim players off the waiver wire who were cut the day before. The Chiefs will be looking at players cut from other teams without question. They’ve had some major hits there (Ron Parker being one).

Monday: This is the start of game week but the Chiefs could still be making roster moves. All those players that were claimed off of the waiver wire on Sunday will force more players off the roster. Lots of moves to be made.
