What would it take for the Chiefs to trade Alex Smith to the Jaguars?

New, comments

Some of you will see this headline and scream, “THERE’S NO WAY THE CHIEFS ARE TRADING ALEX SMITH!”

And I agree with you. I don’t think they will because I don’t expect them to get an offer that would make it worth it. How much exactly would that offer be?

That’s the hypothetical I want to talk about here. The Jaguars played their second preseason game last night and it is undeniable that Blake Bortles has struggled. Check out this morning’s coverage from our Jaguars blog, Big Cat Country. It’s a disaster.

The Jaguars have openly said they have a quarterback competition. This is Bortles’ fourth year after being the third overall pick. He should be hitting his prime. Instead, he’s competing with Chad Henne for a job.

Big Cat Country thinks the Jaguars have a roster capable of competing for an AFC South title ... except the quarterback. They’re not winning anything with Bortles.

So, what would it take for you to trade Alex Smith to the Jaguars?

A first round pick? Yes, I would do it for a first round pick. I question whether the Jaguars would. Admittedly, this would still be hard for me because the Chiefs are a playoff-contending team with Alex Smith in 2017 and I don’t think they’re as strong of a team in 2017 with Mahomes. The other thing is that, if Alex is as good as I am saying he is, then the Jaguars probably aren’t going to be picking in the top 10 again. The flip side is that Mahomes would get some playing time. The Chiefs would rip off the bandaid and dive right in. I know some Chiefs fans want that regardless.

A second round pick? I don’t think that would be worth it for me. Maybe if you packaged multiple second round picks or a second and other picks. The Chiefs have been to consecutive divisional round playoff games so I need more than to move Alex.

What about you? What would it take for you to pull the trigger?
