Chiefs say CJ Spiller has been “an unbelievable surprise”

CJ Spiller is making the Kansas City Chiefs roster. That’s still in the prediction phase at this point but the more we see out of Spiller the more I’m starting to think he could contribute this year.

It’s not just what we’ve seen but it’s also what we’ve heard. Like this, for example, from Chiefs running backs coach Eric Bieniemy.

“CJ Spiller has been an unbelievable surprise,” Bieniemy said. “He has been healthy. If you haven’t noticed, he is pretty fast. He is pretty fast, pretty explosive. He does a great job in the run game. He has been doing a great job picking up the offense and I cannot complain.”

Bieniemy said that he can’t speak to Spiller’s past, which is that of a back who hasn’t rushed for over 300 yards since 2013. He can only speak to what he’s seen with Spiller in training camp.

“He comes to work every single day and does a great job of asking questions in the classroom,” Bieniemy said. “He does a great job of taking notes and then he comes out here and he works his tail off as if he was a rookie. He is one of those guys who comes early and stays late.”

We still have a few days of camp and three more preseason games so our opinion of Spiller could change (or he could get hurt). However, if you’re asking me today, I’m putting Spiller ahead of Charcandrick West.
