I recently had an opportunity to interview NFL super-agent Tom Condon on “The Fuzzcast,” and towards the end of the interview, I asked him about one of his clients, Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith.
My question was what he tells someone like Smith when his team drafts the quarterback of the future. I found his comments rather interesting:
“Alex Smith? I don’t have to give him any advice,” Condon said. “He knows exactly what to do, and he’s been in some really tough situations before, and he’s as tough as an old boot. And so he knows just what he’s got to do, and he’ll play really well, and for the team, they’re hoping that Pat (Mahomes) is going to be their future, but Alex is the present, and as good a football player as he is, he’s going to have opportunities whether it’s in Kansas City or someplace else.”
I think it’s something you don’t really think about heading into this season. Mahomes will be the next quarterback up, and if the Chiefs decide that next year is his turn to start, then Smith, 33, is in the midst of a yearlong audition for the other 31 teams this season.
This epsiode of the “The Fuzzcast” as a whole is very insightful and provides a nice look into the agency side of pro football. If you’re interested in that sort of thing, you can check out the full show on iTunes or on a web player below.
