Chiefs preseason snap counts: Patrick Mahomes leads the QBs, Spencer Ware leads RBs

Let's talk about Patrick Mahomes

Posted by Arrowhead Pride: For Kansas City Chiefs Fans on Friday, August 11, 2017

Let’s review the snap counts from the Kansas City Chiefs preseason loss to the San Francisco 49ers. (Note: Go over to Niners Nation if you’re looking for the 49ers snap counts)

Quarterbacks

QB Patrick Mahomes: 20

QB Tyler Bray: 14

QB Joel Stave: 10

QB Alex Smith: 8

The first team got one good scoring series in and they were done. That led to Tyler Bray coming in earlier which led to Patrick Mahomes getting a bunch of work. As Adam Teicher noted, this could be the most we see from Mahomes until the finale. Alex should get more and more work leading into the third game.

Center

C Mike Person: 25

C Mitch Morse: 19

Until I’m told otherwise I’m expecting Mitch Morse to start and Zach Fulton to back him up.

Offensive guard

G Andrew Tiller: 23

G Jordan Devey: 23

G Bryan Witzmann: 19

G Laurent Duvernay-Tardif: 19

G Damien Mama: 10

G Zach Fulton: 8

The Chiefs are still without Parker Ehinger so this position group feels a little incomplete. I also want to know if Damien Mama is a practice squad candidate.

Offensive tackle

OT Jah Reid: 23

OT Eric Fisher: 19

OT Mitch Schwartz: 19

OT Donald Hawkins: 19

OT Isaiah Battle: 14

OT Joe Cheek: 10

OT Josh James: 10

Jah Reid was playing well into the second half which I found interesting. The Chiefs need a swing tackle. Witzmann can do both (but wouldn’t if he ends up keeping the starting left guard job). Isaiah Battle drew the ire of Chiefs fans when the penalty that brought back Mahomes’ first deep pass was on him.

Running backs

RB Spencer Ware: 18

RB Charcandrick West: 14

RB Kareem Hunt: 9

RB CJ Spiller: 8

RB Devine Redding: 3

FB Anthony Sherman: 7

Not a great night for Charcandrick West but it’s a small sample size. I’d like to see more out of him. Same with Kareem Hunt. He had two touches. I’d like to see a lot more of him in the next couple of weeks. And to repeat myself for a third time, I want to see more CJ Spiller too.

Tight end

TE Ross Travis: 20

TE Demetrius Harris: 19

TE Gavin Escobar: 16

TE Orson Charles: 13

This group is missing Travis Kelce, who did not play. I think Kelce, Harris and probably Escobar have the best shots here with Ross Travis right there (they could keep four tight ends).

Wide receiver

WR Seantavius Jones: 19

WR Demarcus Robinson: 18

WR Marcus Kemp: 15

WR Chris Conley: 14

WR Jehu Chesson: 13

WR Tyreek Hill: 12

WR Albert Wilson: 11

WR De’Anthony Thomas: 10

WR Gehrig Dieter: 8

WR Tevin Jones: 5

WR Tony Stevens: 4

WR Robert Wheelwright: 4

Did we learn anything new here? Seantavius Jones is the biggest roster bubble player as some believe after a strong camp performance that he can make the team. Chris Conley had a pretty good night before coming out with a knee contusion. Tyreek Hill of course had that first bomb. We should see more from Conley and Hill next week. I’d like to see somebody from this group pop next week.

Inside linebacker

LB Ukeme Eligwe: 41

LB Derrick Johnson: 22

LB Josh Mauga: 20

LB Kevin Pierre-Louis: 23

LB Ramik Wilson: 17

LB Justin March: 14

LB Terrance Smith: 13

Geez, a lot of names here. Derrick Johnson and Ramik Wilson started the game. DJ is obviously safe and Ramik, who was about to be cut a year ago, should be safe as well. I like KPL’s chances after the trade. I also like the veteran Josh Mauga and the rookie Ukeme Eligwe. I like Justin March and even Terrance Smith but I’m not sure how they get on the 53-man.

Outside linebacker

LB Marcus Rush: 73

LB Earl Okine: 43

LB Frank Zombo: 38

LB Justin Houston: 4

LB Dee Ford: 4

The first team was out after one series. Marcus Rush had a sack. He also has a terrific name. How can Marcus Rush not end up being a great pass rusher? Keep this man, Chiefs!

Defensive end

DE Tanoh Kpassagnon: 49

DE David King: 37

DE Rakeem Nunez-Roches: 26

DE Ricky Ali’ifua: 24

DE Maurice Swain: 22

DE Allen Bailey: 13

Love that TK got the most work here. He needs it coming from a school like Villanova that isn’t a traditional football powerhouse. David King flashed a little bit when he got into the backfield.

Nose tackle

NT Jarvis Jenkins: 37

NT Cam Thomas: 30

The Chiefs were playing without Bennie Logan and Roy Miller, who we think will be at nose tackle.

Cornerback

CB Kenneth Acker: 41

CB Ashton Lampkin: 34

CB JJ Nelson: 27

CB DJ White: 26

CB De’Vante Bausby: 23

CB Phillip Gaines: 22

CB Terrance Mitchell: 18

CB Steven Nelson: 18

CB Trevon Hartfield: 6

CB Marcus Peters: 4

I’m not really sure where to start here. Marcus Peters was among the first to come out. Steven Nelson had a nice pass breakup over the middle. I need to watch this game again to sort these corners out.

Safety

S Leon McQuay: 41

S Eric Murray: 40

S Steven Terrell: 38

S Daniel Sorensen: 22

S Ron Parker: 4

Eric Murray was hyped at training camp and while it’s just one play he whiffed on a tackle in the middle of the field that broke open a big play. He was in there more after Eric Berry was out.
