Rookie quarterbacks look good so far, Patrick Mahomes is up next

Three quarterbacks were drafted in the first 12 picks this year, including the Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes at No. 10. Because they were all drafted so close together we know Mahomes is going to be compared with Mitch Trubisky (No. 2 overall) and especially Deshaun Watson (No. 12 overall) as their careers go on.

Well, let’s get to comparing!

Trubisky and Watson have both played and they’re both getting strong reviews. Watson completed 15-of-25 passes for 179 yards in the Texans preseason opener while running for another 24 yards and a touchdown. Not all-world numbers but still pretty good for the first game. It prompted tweets like this:

Trubisky started the Bears preseason opener with 10 straight completions. He ended up 18-of-25 for 166 yards, a touchdown and another 38 yards on the ground. I’ll admit, I was impressed by those numbers. I read stories of Trubisky having trouble fumbling snaps during camp so I thought he would struggle.

Even DeShone Kizer, the next drafted quarterback after the first rounders (No. 52 overall) sends this one 50-plus yards on a rope. Damn. He was 11-of-18 for 184 yards and a touchdown.

It’s a good reminder that, as excited as Chiefs fans are, there are other fan bases just as excited about their rookie quarterback. If Mahomes goes out there and throws a bomb like Kizer or runs one in like Watson or hits 10 in a row like Trubisky, Kansas City is going to go berserk.
