Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes one of just a few unsigned draft picks

The Kansas City Chiefs have yet to sign QB Patrick Mahomes to his rookie contract. While there doesn’t appear to be any cause for concern at this point, Mahomes is one of eight unsigned draft picks, seven of which are first rounders.

I wonder if not signing Mahomes (yet) has anything to do with John Dorsey’s firing. Considering he’s the GM and would be involved in this I wouldn’t be surprised if it were delayed because of that or because the Chiefs got a new cap guy this summer. There have been changes in the Chiefs front office and that very well could have actual effects on the team, like not getting your first rounder signed on time.

More likely, though, this won’t be a story. Mahomes will get signed in the next couple of weeks and not miss a day of training camp. If I were the Chiefs, I would announce the new GM and then the next day get Mahomes signed for a little good news, something we haven’t seen much of in Kansas City this offseason.

Until then, we wait.

The full list of unsigned picks (via PFT): Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky (No. 2 overall), 49ers defensive end Solomon Thomas (No. 3 overall), Titans receiver Cory Davis (No. 5 overall), Jets safety Jamal Adams (No. 6 overall), Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes (No. 10 overall), Raiders cornerback Gareon Conley (No. 24 overall) and safety Jabrill Peppers (No. 25 overall), Raiders cornerback Obi Melifonwu (second round)
