Chiefs’ Chris Jones recently had surgery, will start on PUP list

Andy Reid speaks with the media at Training Camp

I said you could expect a surprise at the Kansas City Chiefs opening press conference for training camp and we got one. Chris Jones recently had knee surgery and is starting camp on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list.

This is the preseason PUP list. It doesn’t necessarily mean he’s going to miss any games. However, he can not practice while he is on the PUP list so Jones won’t be practicing until he’s off that list. The hope is that this is just a minor deal and he comes back just fine but I’m not sure on the timeframe we’re talking about.

Andy Reid said he didn’t think it would be a long thing and that this was pretty routine. “We’re not looking at midseason or anything like that. That’s not what this is,” Reid said.

He mentioned Rakeem Nunez-Roches when talking about Chris Jones backups.

It’s too bad it happened so late in the summer because he will miss some time now. If the Chiefs had a choice, they probably would’ve done this earlier in the offseason, right? So I wonder if something happened recently that made this surgery necessary.

The only thing slowing Chris Jones down is a surgery. That’s why this one is frustrating. All signs point to him having an even bigger year in 2017 -- if he’s healthy enough.

Also starting on the PUP list is Parker Ehinger and Dadi Nicolas. Derrick Johnson and Travis Kelce will not start on PUP.

(Note: Thank you to the random AP reader who messaged me a couple days ago and told me Chris Jones recently had surgery. I thought you were a lying wacko but you are not)
