The Kansas City Chiefs have been a playoff team in three of the past four years and entering this offseason the thinking was that they would be again with Alex Smith under center again. Then they drafted a quarterback, cut Jeremy Maclin, fired John Dorsey and it feels like everything is going wrong.
So wrong that I’m not sure I can argue much with this 8-8 prediction from USA Today.

The Chargers over the Chiefs seemed laughable to me a couple months ago. Now it doesn’t feel as crazy. Andy Reid will keep the Chiefs competitive. He’s good enough to ensure that. However, the Chiefs are in one of the two best divisions in football and momentum seems to be heading in the wrong direction.
This season will be a good test for a couple of things. First, how much does the off the field stuff / front office stuff matter? I know there are plenty of Chiefs fans who say they’re going to be fine (and I hope you’re right!). The other thing is what kind of difference Andy Reid can make. Can he keep them together in the face of adversity?
