Texas Tech knew Chiefs were into Patrick Mahomes early thanks to a connection

It’s Big 12 media days so we have a quote here from Texas Tech head coach Kliff Klingsbury on his former QB Patrick Mahomes. Klingsbury has said nice things about Mahomes and his fit with the Chiefs before and that continues here. The question was asked by the Star’s Blair Kerkhoff (and I didn’t travel to Texas for Big 12 media days so thank you Blair for asking this question).

Watch the video here, see the quote below.

“He’s unquestionably one of the best quarterback developers that league has ever seen and to see how much they wanted Pat to jump up 17 spots to get him,” Klingsbury said via Fox Sports dot com. “I knew early on in our season that they loved him because one of our former coaches now works there for the Chiefs. They had been on Pat the entire time. To have an established quarterback who by all accounts is a tremendously hard worker and good guy in Alex Smith to learn from. To me it’s an ideal situation. Patrick is only 21 years old. He picked up quarterback basically his junior year in high school so the sky is the limit in the right situation and luckily in my opinion he landed in the perfect situation.”

So, did I just not notice there was a former Texas Tech coach and player on the Chiefs staff? I went through the Chiefs coaching staff bios and assistant defensive line coach Mike Smith was at Texas Tech from 2013-15 AND played there in college.

We should’ve seen it coming.
