10 Things to Know About New Chiefs GM Brett Veach | Chiefs.com

"I think one thing that we do here which is really cool is we kind of cross-train,” Veach said back in 2015. “A lot of our pro guys help out on the college side, and then vice-versa, where a lot of our college guys will be asked for our input on the pro side. So, there's constant communication and back-and-forth in regards to strengths and weaknesses of where we can improve the team.

Connections, relationships propel Brett Veach up NFL ranks | Chiefs Digest

Veach left the Eagles for Kansas City in March 2013, but his fingerprints remained on the team’s draft that season. The Eagles spent their third-round pick on LSU defensive tackle Bennie Logan. Logan signed with the Chiefs as a free agent this offseason and stands in line to start on the team’s defensive line.

The Chiefs immediately tapped into the southeast region upon Veach’s arrival, selecting a trio of players including Arkansas running back Knile Davis, Alabama linebacker Nico Johnson and Georgia cornerback Nico Johnson. The club also signed undrafted free agent Tennessee quarterback Tyler Bray and wide receiver Frankie Hammond Jr. from Florida.

Q&A: Who is on the hottest seat in the AFC West? | ESPN

The Chiefs put Alex Smith on notice in April when they not only drafted quarterback Patrick Mahomes II but also traded next year's first-round pick for the chance to do so. The Chiefs have a lot invested in Mahomes, and it's only a matter of time before he's their starting quarterback. That time is unlikely to come this season, however, as the Chiefs seem determined to gives Mahomes as much developmental time as he needs. So Smith, 33, has at least another season as the starter, meaning he controls part of this narrative. If he ups his game, the Chiefs will have a difficult time moving him out of the starting spot in 2018. But if Smith doesn't find a way to help Kansas City expand its passing game or take the Chiefs beyond the divisional round of the playoffs, where each of their past two seasons ended, the future of Kansas City's starting spot is more about Mahomes and where he is in his development.

The success and failure of the entire organization is now in the hands of Andy Reid. From player personel decisions to on field decisions they all end at the feet of the head coach. If this team is going to advance to at least an AFC Title Game in the 2017 season, Reid is going to have to put his players in the best position to win. Reid has been out coached a lot in the playoffs with both the Chiefs and the Eagles. It's time to reverse that trend.

5. Kansas City Chiefs: Notable names and resumes, yet age and injuries have taken a toll. Since his 22-sack 2014 season, Justin Houston has missed half the team's games with knee issues. Dee Ford and Tamba Hali, 34, would form a great all-around player if their talents could be merged. ILB Derrick Johnson, also 34, has ruptured each Achilles over the last three seasons, the most recent occurring in December. Ramik Wilson deserves more publicity. Overall, could be boom or bust.
