Chiefs 2018 free agency starts March 14, other important dates

The NFL released a calendar of important dates including the 2018 free agency date which is March 14. The NFL is a year-round event so we care about free agency as much as we do the games it seems.

The calendar also reminded me that the NFL got rid of part of the roster cut downs. You used to go from 90 to 75 players and then to 53 players in cut downs but the NFL has scrapped that and now you go from 90 to 53 after the preseason.

The NFL’s trade deadline comes on Halloween. That’s fine though because there usually isn’t any action at the trade deadline in the NFL.

January 1 is the start of a new year and the first time that Marcus Peters can sign a new deal. Draft picks can’t sign a contract extension until after their third season. Peters is the one we’ll be talking about but there will be others from that class too.

A few of the top dates:

August 31: Final preseason game

September 2: Roster cut downs to 53 players

October 31: Trade deadline

January 1: 2015 draft picks can sign new deals (hi, Marcus Peters)

February 4: The Super Bowl

March 14: Free agency
