Trades in the NFL aren’t unheard of by any means but they are rarer than other sports. With 11 players on the field at once it’s not so easy to plug and play someone.
All that won’t stop us from coming up with fun trade rumors though. Trade talk in the NFL is fun even though we know much of it won’t pan out.
Bleacher Report posed a few trade ideas including one involving the Kansas City Chiefs. They have the Chiefs trading for cornerback Darqueze Dennard out of Cincinnati (and previously out of Michigan State).
So the Chiefs don't need to make any sort of cannonball into the trade market to solve their issue opposite Peters. They just need another option to explore—a cornerback they can get cheaply—that still adds intrigue to their roster. The Chiefs have only $11.7 million in cap space, according to Spotrac.
Any player who was a high draft pick and is now flirting with bust status fits that description. Which is why the Chiefs would be wise to ask the Cincinnati Bengals about Darqueze Dennard.
I’m ... intrigued? Sort of. Sure, I won’t turn down good cornerback help, especially 25-year old cornerback help. However, the Chiefs have a lot of young cornerback talent. The Chiefs agree, too. Based on the Chiefs actions so far this offseason, they are happy with their corners. They had the opportunity to add one in free agency and the draft and did not.
So, I’m intrigued by the trade idea. I’ll always take more cornerbacks. But we should also recognize the possibility that cornerback isn’t the need that many Chiefs fans think it is. There are few “sure things” opposite Marcus Peters but I like the quantity. What if Phillip Gaines stays healthy? What if Terrance Mitchell is for real? What if Steven Nelson keeps getting better?
