It seems just about every Kansas City Chiefs player has pointed out that Alex Smith, not Patrick Mahomes is their starting quarterback. It’s almost as if someone has told these Chiefs players to say that.
Mitch Morse spoke to the media today and was asked about everyone saying that and he said he didn’t need to be told that. He said that it’s just the truth; Alex is the starter, not Mahomes.
I think some Chiefs players say this because, nationally, it’s viewed that there’s a quarterback controversy with the Chiefs trading up for Mahomes in the draft. But I don’t feel that way here in KC. I don’t see a quarterback controversy this year. At least not yet.
Andy Reid is leading the way on this one. Right after the Chiefs drafted Mahomes, Reid came out and said that Alex Smith is their starting quarterback in 2017 and Mahomes needs time. Reid has been doing this for a while and knows that there are going to be calls for Mahomes early and often and he wanted to squash that as much as possible.
The message has been received.
