Chiefs OTAs return: Who shows up, position battles, Patrick Mahomes third string

The Kansas City Chiefs offseason workouts continue. The Chiefs will hit the practice field today for their second round of OTAs this week. They’ll have three more days of practices. It’s still no pads and no tackling but they can go offense vs. defense on the field so we’re getting closer to real football.

The Chiefs had their first three days of OTAs last week. Among the highlights were the Chiefs missing three star players: Eric Berry, Justin Houston and Marcus Peters. There was no reason given for their absence because it’s voluntary. It did create a debate around here whether they should have been here or not. With more than 2,000 votes cast, the results say:

The other highlight was Patrick Mahomes running with the third team behind Alex Smith and Tyler Bray. That’s where I expected him to be and I would expect him to be there again this week. The question I have is whether he’ll have a real shot at being the No. 2 this year or whether the Chiefs are content with Tyler Bray there and keeping Mahomes on the bench all year. We won’t find that out this week.

The Chiefs are also working with a number of position battles which won’t really heat up until training camp. The battle at the second corner position as well as running back look like good ones. I would also add receiver in there as a position that will be crowded.

Here’s the Chiefs entire offseason schedule.
