Do NFL teams have depth charts in the middle of May? If there is, it’s an informal one. Who takes how many reps at OTAs is not always an accurate reflection of whatever depth chart there is. But the Chiefs just drafted a quarterback and you better believe I want to know where he’s lining up.
ESPN’s Adam Teicher reports from OTAs that Mahomes was third line in reps behind Alex Smith and Tyler Bray.
This is what I expected. Andy Reid will speak to the media on Thursday and I can bet he will once again say that this is Alex’s team and Mahomes is not ready. As Teicher noted in his piece, the Chiefs are making it very, very clear that Alex is their 2017 starter.
To me, there’s still a backup quarterback question but it’s less about Mahomes and more about Bray. Will the Chiefs go out and sign a veteran backup? Or do they believe Bray could potentially handle that job? Sure, it could also be Mahomes but the way the Chiefs are saying he’s not ready makes me think, in an ideal world, they want him to sit all year. GM John Dorsey did say a few weeks ago that the backup could be on the roster so I guess we’ll see.
It’s become almost a joke among Chiefs fans to talk about Bray’s potential because he’s been on the team for four years, ended multiple seasons on IR and hasn’t taken a snap in a regular season game. We know so very little about him. It appears that this may finally be the year where we figure out how the Chiefs really feel about him. If they make him the No. 2 then maybe this wasn’t all a joke after all.
